About Me

SCWarin-picI am a recovering academic who loves to write. I am not a morning person, I love Jif peanut butter, and I’m terrified of cockroaches.

I grew up in West Africa where my parents worked as missionaries for 20 years, and I moved between Burkina Faso, where my parents worked, and Niger and Côte d’Ivoire, where I attended boarding schools. This makes me a Third Culture Kid (TCK) – someone whose “native” culture is a blend of their parents’ home culture and the culture of the foreign countries they grew up in. My nomadic youth gave me quite a travel bug, and since leaving Africa I’ve lived in Wollongong, Australia (study abroad in college), Mali (Peace Corps after college), and Stockholm, Sweden. I’ve traveled some in the vicinities of those places, but there are many more places to see!

Now I’m settling down in my parents’ home state of Michigan, with my Swedish husband and my cat Oliver. It feels good to put down some roots.

My undergraduate degree is in Art, from Kalamazoo College in Michigan, and I also have a master’s degree in Linguistics from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. I fantasize about going back to school, but I have determined I must pay off my current student loans first.

I am writing a series of action/thriller books with an element of fantasy. They center around an assassin who is drawn into the centuries-long conflict between two immortals. There is travel to exotic locations, deception, fighting, and sarcastic quips. There’s a little magic, a little history,  a little romance, and a lot of excitement. Basically all of my favorite things!

Some more of my favorites:

Movies: Skyfall (love James Bond!), The Transporter (love Statham!), Howl’s Moving Castle, the original Star Wars trilogy, American Psycho, Serenity, Volunteers, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, White Christmas.

Books: The Lord of the Rings, Lord of the Flies, Ender’s Game, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Pride and Prejudice, The Master and Margarita, Heart of Darkness, Nation by Terry Pratchett.

Music: U2, Dire Straits, Ali Farka Touré (a brilliant Malian musician), Simon and Garfunkel, Enya, Sam Roberts.
